Wingerworth windmills
Wingerworth windmills location could be indicated by the 1758 map of Wingerworth and Tupton shows that to the north of the church on the east side of Longedge Lane is ‘Little Windmill Close’ and on the west side is ‘Great Windmill Close’. No record of windmills in this location has so far been found’
Alan Gifford21makes reference to a windmill listed by Farey in 1808 but this was at Swathwick and he also says that there is no confirmation on any old maps, advertisements or other records. He goes on to say that ‘There are no known mills in the immediate vicinity of Wingerworth with which it might be confused.’
So although the map seems to indicate that there could even have been two windmills, at present it will have to remain a mystery.
